N2Africa-Ethiopia Partners’ and Progress Review Meeting 30 November - 1 December 2017 Lalibela Hall, ILRI Campus, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Project Background

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) funded project entitled “Putting nitrogen fixation to work for Smallholder farmers in Africa (N2Africa) aims to build sustainable, long-term partnerships to enable African smallholder farmers to benefit from symbiotic N2-fixation by grain legumes through effective production technologies including inoculants and fertilizers. National level capabilities will be developed to sustain the pipeline and delivery of continuous improvement in legume production technologies tailored to local settings. The project will reach more than 550,000 farmers with a return on investment of US$3.5 for each US$ invested.

The N2Africa Phase II project is being implemented in Ethiopia by a diversity of public and private sector partners following distinct models and approaches. Assessment of progresses towards results, models used to achieve the results, sustainability of such models and early risks identified related to the sustainability of such models, and recommendations to ensure the sustainability is required to enable the smooth exit of the project. In this regard a two-day workshop is planned from 30 November-1 December 2017 in the presence of project coordination team and N2Africa-Ethiopia national partners.

Objectives of the workshop

The overall objective of the workshop is to have a review of the project progress results against targets, identify gaps and develop strategies to ensure sustainability post project period. Specific objectives will include:

  • Review project progress (outcome level indicators) against set targets both at project and partnership levels,
  • Assess the specific models and approaches used in attaining the project outcomes, and evaluate their sustainability,
  • Identify risks associated to the respective models and recommendations to sustain the approaches and
  • Review the project exit strategy document and contextualize in view of specific issues from the respective partners

Expected Outputs

  • Project progresses towards results developed, and performance achievements assessed
  • Early risks and possible remedies for sustaining models and approaches used in technology dissemination, legume input supply and output marketing identified,
  • Final project exit strategy document detailing sustainability gaps and strategic scenarios to sustain project initiatives developed and shared with partners;
  • Key areas of activity implementations for 2018 identified and consensus reached.

Process

Overall country and partnership up-to-date project progress against cumulative targets at grant end presented following the result framework. Levels of achievement and the underlying factors discussed in plenary. Draft country exit strategy document presented and enriched. Partner specific capacity gaps to ensure sustainability post project period will be discussed, group works, and plenary discussions will generate consensus for improvements to be made on the overall country exit strategy.
